We had the privilege of attending Eco Fashion Week Vancouver presented by Aveda on Tuesday September 28th for the Nixxi, Lav & Kush, and Kdon runway shows. Eco Fashion Week (September 27th-30th) is not only an event to showcase local designers, but its intent is to educate and inform the fashion industry about sustainability and being environmentally conscious. Its message is that fashion doesn’t have to be wasteful and destructive to our world, and we shouldn’t have to pay the price for looking good! Alongside runway shows, EFWV features key note speakers and press conferences that delve into issues of fashion and its impact on the environment, ecofashion and trends, and how to practice sustainability in the textile industry. Although both of us forget to recycle sometimes (yes we know, we’re gonna get struck by lightning), we were here to look out for fabulous clothes and support a great event nevertheless.  The air was buzzing with excitement and clamour over wine and champagne in the lobby before we took our seats.

All three designers were inspired by Earth and the environment for their clothing lines that night. Earth-tones were dominant on the runway with colors such as army green, beiges, navy blue, and browns. The first designer to grace the runway was Nixxi…

Nixxi
Nixxi is made in Vancouver, and it focuses on quality garments made with organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, soy, organic wool, silk, and linen. They believe in using natural fibres from renewable crops and working with a local production house that provides an adequate environment for their employees. Nixxi is best known for crisp, edgy, and contemporary cuts.

The collection on the runway included simple and flowy pieces with asymmetrical and edgy cuts made with soft knits. Models rocked an effortless yet fashionable look (a few off-the shoulder tops made it to the ensemble). Lots of white and solid colours made their appearance, keeping accessories to a bare minimum. Nixxi kept things fresh, crisp, and clean.

Lav & Kush
Lav & Kush was launched in 2008 by designer Angela Saxena with a vision to make a positive difference in the fashion world. The fabrics used are organic and sustainable, and they’ve been known to support various non-profit organizations such as PETA, BCSPCA, David Suzuki Foundation and World Vision. Lav & Kush are best known for flirty and feminine pieces.

Lav & Kush featured dominant hues of blue in their line along with one-pieces that were chic and femme. The collection was one of our favourites because it had a vintage and retro feel to it. Rompers were here to stay, and floral dresses made a bold statement on the runway as tousled-hair models sported chunky and earthy necklaces.

Kdon
Kdon is created by Kim Cathers (you might have seen her on Project Runway Canada as a finalist) who has been involved in the fashion industry for over 15 years. She used to recycle old clothes to make new and creative pieces of clothing. She is now a textile recycling activist and slowly making her mark in the fashion industry. Kdon is best known for intricate designs and careful attention to detail.

Kdon donned the most couture-inspired line of the night featuring more intricate and textured designs in Kim Cather’s collection. Long draped dresses made its way to the runway, and there was attention to detail with the embroidery. Scrunched, ruched, tiered, and gathered pieces were also a theme on the runway with earthy tones. Kdon was our favourite pick of the evening.

It was a great show, and if you want to learn more about Eco Fashion Week Vancouver and their cause or check out local & eco-friendly designers go to www.ecofashion-week.com or www.facebook.com/ecofashionweek.

Also a big shout-out to Kris Krug, one of the photographers for EFWV, for letting us use his images for our blog posting. Much appreciated! Check out his work at www.staticphotography.com or www.kriskrug.com & follow him on Twitter!
